After She Could Smell Emotions, She Called Off the Wedding Chapter 05
My phone buzzed nonstop in the crowdedÂ
terminal at Keflavik International Airport, drawingÂ
curious glances from passing travelers.Â
Nathan and Jasmine had clearly seen the pictureÂ
in our group chat.Â
Nathan’s messages came first.Â
[Georgie, where are you?]Â
[What was that picture supposed to mean? YouÂ
know about us, don’t you? Please let me explain.]Â
[Georgia Bennett, answer your phone!]Â
My phone was already showing more than ninety–nine unread messages. He had been calling since shortly after six that morning in Seattle andÂ
hadn’t stopped.Â
Jasmine had called and messaged even more, but everything she sent eventually came down to theÂ
same plea.Â
[Georgie, please come home. Let me explain everything in person. I’m begging you.]Â
[Please don’t make this public.]Â
I didn’t respond. I deleted every message, blocked them both, and removed their numbers from myÂ
phone.Â
That was the end of the three of us. I was doneÂ
with people who claimed to love me while hurtingÂ
me over and over again.Â
When I looked up, a pale ribbon of aurora shimmered across the dark sky beyond theÂ
terminal windows.Â
It was breathtaking.Â
I smiled, picked up my luggage, and kept walking.Â
Twelve hours earlier, back in Seattle, Nathan hadÂ
left home and checked into his hotel.Â
The thought of marrying Georgie the next day. made his heart race, catching him off guard.Â
For years, He had convinced himself that he only cared about Georgie because she was Jasmine’sÂ
younger sister.Â
But the nervous anticipation in his chest told himÂ
otherwise.Â
He was genuinely looking forward to marrying her.Â
Nathan thought of Jasmine one last time, looked through their old messages and pictures, then deleted them all.Â
He had made his choice. From now on, He would forget Jasmine and build a life with Georgie.Â
Still, at the last moment, he called Jasmine to say goodbye.Â
“I’ve checked into the hotel,” he told her. “Georgie is at home. I’m supposed to meet her at the venue tomorrow morning.”Â
Jasmine was quiet for a moment.Â
“Build a life with her, Nathan. Forget about me. IÂ
love you, but this has to end.”Â
His grip tightened around the phone. He wasÂ
silent for two long seconds.Â
“I’ll take good care of her.”Â
Then he ended the call.Â
Jasmine’s confession weighed heavily on his.Â
chest.Â
If she had said those words the day before, heÂ
would’ve taken her hand and left Seattle without aÂ
moment’s hesitation. But she had chosen today-Â
the day he finally realized his feelings for GeorgieÂ
had nothing to do with Jasmine.Â
Nathan let out a bitter laugh.Â
Maybe he and Jasmine truly had never beenÂ
meant to be.Â
Before going to sleep, he sent Georgie one finalÂ
message.Â
[I love you, Georgie.]Â
His alarm went off at six the next morning. He was supposed to be at the wedding venue by eight. Still half–asleep, he reached for his phone. and noticed the attachment Georgie had sent to the group chat after midnight.Â
“That girl,” he murmured, shaking his head. “Why was she still awake so late?”Â
His voice died the moment he opened the picture.Â
The room fell deathly silent.Â
Nathan stared at the screen, his breath catching. His fingers shook when he enlarged the image,Â
and he nearly dropped the phone.Â
It was the cottage.Â
The house he and Jasmine had used for theirÂ
secret meetings.Â
And Georgie had sent the picture.Â
Nathan couldn’t bring himself to consider whatÂ
that meant. Only two words remained in his head.Â
It was over.Â
He drew a ragged breath, fighting down his panic. He called and messaged Georgie frantically, butÂ
she never responded.Â
Unable to wait any longer, he pulled on his clothes.Â
and raced home.Â
Jasmine was already standing outside the frontÂ
door, her face streaked with tears.Â
“She knows!” Jasmine screamed when she sawÂ
him. “She knows everything!”Â
“She sent a picture of the cottage to the groupÂ
chat. She knows about us, Nathan. What are weÂ
going to do?”Â
Jasmine sank into a crouch, sobbingÂ
uncontrollably.Â
Under any other circumstances, Nathan would’veÂ
pulled her into his arms and promised that he wasÂ
there for her. But his own breathing was ragged,Â
and he couldn’t force out a single word ofÂ
comfort.Â
What were they going to do?Â
Nathan unlocked the door, and they rushed inside.Â
“Georgia! Georgie!”Â
The house was empty.Â
Nathan stopped dead. The hands that neverÂ
shook in surgery were trembling now.Â
Jasmine collapsed onto the couch.Â
Georgie knew.Â
Soon, everyone else would know that Jasmine had been having an affair with her sister’s fiancé. How could she ever face their friends and family again?Â
Panic swallowed her. Her mind went blank.Â
Nathan went into the bedroom and foundÂ
Georgie’s side of the closet empty. Her toiletries and cosmetics were gone from the vanity.Â
Her passport and personal documents were gone too.Â
Only then did he understand that Georgie had trulyÂ
left him.Â
