After She Could Smell Emotions, She Called Off the Wedding Chapter 08

Nathan’s hoarse voice rasped in my ear.

I found you, Georgie. I knew Iceland was the first

place you’d go. This was the trip we always talked

about taking together.”

His arms tightened around me.

You haven’t let go of me either, have you? I can

explain everything.”

Once, I had loved the warmth of his embrace.

Now it only disgusted me.

His scent was overwhelmingly sweet, and I knew

the emotion itself was real. That only made me

feel worse. Whatever love he felt now had come

after years of lies and betrayal, so it no longer had

the right to matter.

A man who had loved Jasmine for years had

suddenly decided he loved me more.

The thought made my stomach turn.

I shoved him away.

Don’t touch me!”

You think finding me here means you understand me, Nathan? Looking at you makes me sick.”

He flinched.

He didn’t argue. He looked down, absorbing the blow.

I’m sorry.”

I admit that I started dating you because it kept me close to Jasmine. I also admit that I never truly ended things with her.”

When Nathan looked at me again, his eyes were

red.

But people change, Georgie. Somewhere over the years, I fell in love with you without even realizing

it.”

Please believe me. You’re the only one I love now.”

For a moment, I could only stare at him. Then the

sheer absurdity of his words made me laugh.

Love?”

Do you know how I discovered what you and Jasmine were doing?”

His expression shifted as I continued.

I know this sounds strange, but I’ve been able to

smell other people’s emotions since I was a child.”

He stared at me, stunned.

The sweetness of your feelings for Jasmine was unmistakable. On her wedding day, the grief

pouring off you was so bitter I could barely breathe.”

So don’t stand here and try to rewrite what

happened.”

Nathan looked away, defeated.

That wasn’t love anymore. It was obsession, fueled by the fact that she had always remained

out of reach. Losing you shattered that obsession

and forced me to see the truth.”

Georgie, you’re the only person I love. I swear.”

I turned away, unwilling to listen to another word.

Nathan wrapped his arms around me from behind.

and held on, trembling.

Don’t go, Georgie. Please don’t leave me.”

Hit me, scream at me, punish me however you

want. Just don’t leave. I’m begging you.”

Once, his arms had been my favorite place in the

world.

Now they made my skin crawl.

I tore myself free and slapped him across the

face.

Nathan stared at me, stunned.

Don’t touch me.”

Your touch and every word you say make me

sick.”

I returned to the hotel, still shaking with anger. My skin crawled with disgust, so I went straight to the

bathroom and showered.

Only after every trace of Nathan’s scent was gone did my nerves finally begin to settle.

A short while later, Mia forwarded me a video of

Jasmine crying outside Ethan’s apartment,

begging him to let her explain.

[Ethan has already filed for divorce. The scandal is all over social media, and she lost her job too.]

[Serves her right.]

I watched Jasmine’s tearstreaked face without

feeling anything.

She deserved every bit of it. She had known

Nathan was engaged to me, yet she had

continued sneaking around with him.

In the end, she had pretended to cut him off

because she loved me.

What a fraud.

She had only been afraid of being exposed and

losing Ethan, the wealthy man she had married.

I scoffed and walked to the floortoceiling

window. Only then did I realize Nathan was still

standing outside.

I watched him for a while.

Eventually, he collapsed in the blizzard. Several

hotel employees rushed over and called an

ambulance.

I closed the curtains without a second glance.

The next morning, the front desk delivered a letter

Nathan had sent from the hospital.

[Georgie, I’m sorry. Please give me one more

chance.]

I wrote a reply and asked the front desk to send it.

to Nathan after I checked out.

Then I packed my things, left Iceland, and moved

on to my next destination.

At the hospital, Nathan received my note and

eagerly tore open the envelope.

The moment he read it, his face went white.

It contained only two words.

[Drop dead.]

Nathan slumped back against the pillows as tears.

fell onto the note.

I’m sorry”

I lost you
