“Go book Lily a hotel.”
I thoughtfully held the door open for Adrian, then knelt by my suitcase and started packing clothes.
But he didn’t seem happy with my reaction. He grabbed my wrist in one motion.
“She’s an adult. She can book one herself.”
“More importantly, why are you suddenly packing? Where are you going?”
I shook him off.
“Don’t you have your own life to focus on? Why are you always watching my schedule?”
Adrian paused.
He had probably remembered that those were his own words. After a brief silence, he said, “It was my fault for not telling you about that last trip. From now on, I’ll keep you updated on my schedule.”
“Tomorrow I have to go to Lily’s school. Things with her roommates have gotten worse, and her faculty advisor wants to meet with a parent or guardian. Her parents can’t make it in time, so I’m going in their place.”
“Move your surgery to the day after tomorrow. I’ll go with you.”
So in Adrian’s list of priorities, I was still last.
I spoke evenly.
“There’s no need. It makes no difference whether you’re there or not.”
Adrian seemed to genuinely think I didn’t understand the difference, so he explained patiently, “I can help you get in touch with specialists and go over your test results. At the very least, I can wait in line and handle check-in for you.”
My next refusal was cut off by his phone ringing.
Lily’s tearful voice came through the speaker.
“Dr. Hayes, I think someone’s trying to pick the lock outside my door… I’m scared…”
Adrian’s expression changed immediately, and he started striding toward the door.
I called after him. “Wait.”
He stopped and looked back at me, already impatient.
“Jenna, do you think even saving someone is something I need to discuss with you and clear with you first before I go?”
“This isn’t the time for you to throw a tantrum. She could actually be in danger. Can you stop targeting her for once?”
Then, as if remembering something, he let out a sigh.
“I’ll go with you for the surgery. But right now, I need you to understand what matters more.”
Adrian had clearly misunderstood me.
All I wanted to say was that I didn’t need him there for the surgery.
But he was already gone before I could get the words out.
