In the end, my surgery still got rescheduled.
Adrian was acquainted with my attending
physician, and he had gone out of his way to say a word to her.
“Oh, you really need to stop sulking at him all the
time.”
My doctor smiled, like she had seen right through a little girl’s trick.
“Dr. Hayes already told me all about it. All that
stuff you said before about having surgery on your
own was just you trying to make him mad.”
“Dr. Hayes really loves you. He’s that busy, and he
still rearranged his shifts just to be there for a
procedure this minor.”
I opened my mouth.
But nothing came out. I just felt exhausted and
powerless.
According to my original plan, I was supposed to
have surgery and rest today, fly to my new city
tomorrow, and report to my new company the day
after that.
And now every single one of those plans had been thrown into chaos by Adrian with ridiculous ease.
I called to confront him, but Lily answered instead.
“Adrian’s exhausted. He fell asleep. Whatever it is,
you can tell me.”
She kept her voice lowered, sounding full of
apology.
“Oh, right. Weren’t you supposed to have surgery
today? I’m sorry, but Adrian probably can’t go with
you.”
Then she abruptly stopped, as if she had said too
much, and rushed to explain in flustered panic,
“Jenna, don’t get the wrong idea…”
I hung up at once.
As if she were afraid I might get the wrong idea,
Lily updated her Instagram immediately
afterward.

The photo showed a hotel room. Adrian stood by
the window with his arms folded, eyes closed,
faint shadows under them.
He looked like someone who had stayed up all
night keeping watch by her bedside.
I blocked both of them and then booked an
outpatient appointment at a hospital in Stanton.
Thankfully, it was only a minor procedure, and I
wouldn’t need to stay overnight afterward.
If I couldn’t have it done at this hospital, then I
would just go to another one.
