From Clingy to Independent- He Thought I Needed Him Until He Realized I Didn’t Chapter 13
I deliberately left work early to avoid Cameron.
But while I managed to avoid him, I ran straight
into Adrian waiting outside the building with a
bouquet in his arms.
“Jenna, I want to prove it to you. I can do it.”
A few snowflakes started drifting down from the
sky.
Adrian stood beneath a streetlamp.
His breath fogged the cold air and scattered with
every word he spoke..
“All the things you used to do for me, I’ll do them.
for you now. I’ll be the clingy one this time. I’ll be
the one asking about your day and checking in on
everything.”
I looked at him calmly.
“You couldn’t do any of that when we lived in the
same city and saw each other every day. What
makes you think you can do it now with two cities
between us?”
Adrian’s eyes lit up, as if he thought there was still
hope.
“It won’t be long–distance.”
“Lily spread rumors at the hospital and caused a lot of damage. I resigned. Just give me a little time. I’ll find another job at a hospital here. Trust me, we can start over…”
I was too tired to keep circling around this with him, so I cut him off.
“But I’ve already started something new.”
Adrian froze, not understanding at first.
“What new beginning?”
Thinking of that message, I felt a little unsure of
myself.
“I already… have a boyfriend.”
Adrian obviously didn’t believe me. He frowned and demanded, “Who? I don’t believe you could
move on that fast and-”
“That would be me.”
I stared, stunned.
Cameron stepped naturally to my side, took the
bouquet out of Adrian’s arms, and tipped his chin up a little.
“Nice flowers. You can leave now.”
Adrian went completely rigid.
His lips moved, but no sound came out.
After a long while, he let out a sigh.
“So it really is too late, isn’t it?”
No one answered.
Cameron took my hand and led me away, leaving
Adrian standing alone in the swirling snow.
