He Framed Me for a Ring That Was Never Real Chapter 04

I sat bolt upright.

Why was I trying to prove I had not stolen the ring? I needed to prove they were lying.

The entire scheme depended not on whether I had taken the ring, but on the ring itself.

If I proved it was fake, their claims that I had stolen valuable jewelry and tried to swap it would become a joke.

My heart hammered. At last, a sliver of light broke through the darkness.

I grabbed my phone and found Blaire’s number in my contacts.

She was my only opening.

Spencer had sacrificed me without hesitation to protect his cousin.

But Blaire was vain, loved to brag, and cared about her reputation. She would crack far more easily than Spencer.

Instead of calling her, I sent a message.

“Blaire, I’m sorry things have gone this far. What happened with the ring was my fault. To make it right, I’ll go to the Cartier boutique tomorrow and buy you an identical replacement. Send me the original receipt or the reference number.”

I stared at the screen and waited.

It was a trap.

She had never owned a Cartier ring, so she could not produce any proof.

Less than a minute later, Blaire called me.

Her voice was frantic, nothing like her earlier composure.

“Audrey! Audrey, don’t! Please don’t do that! This wasn’t your fault, I swear!”

“How could it not be my fault? I lost something valuable and embarrassed you in front of everyone. I have to replace it.”

I kept my tone sincere.

“No, no, Audrey, I’ll tell you the truth.” Blaire sounded close to tears. “That ring… it wasn’t Cartier. I bought it at a flea market for twenty dollars. I was being vain. I bragged about it! There’s no way I could afford real Cartier!”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Then why didn’t you say so earlier?”

“I… I didn’t dare!” she cried.

“Spencer only said those things to protect my reputation. If I’d admitted it was fake, wouldn’t that have humiliated him in front of everyone?”

I smiled and ended the call.
