He Gave Her an Hour, I Chose Another Groom in Seconds Chapter 08
“If you hadn’t kept playing the helpless victim over and over, Chloe and I… we never would have ended up like this!”
Willa flinched away from the raw fury in his gaze.
Still, she refused to give up. She reached for his hand again, her voice trembling with fake tears. “Silas, don’t say that… You’ve treated me so well lately. I know how you feel. You’re just hurting right now, struggling to let Chloe go.”
“But if you’re with me, I’ll give you everything. We can build our own happy life. Please.”
Silas shrugged her off once more. “Get away from me! Who said I want to be with you? If it weren’t for Chloe, I wouldn’t even know who you are, Willa.”
Willa froze completely, stunned by his cruelty.
She stared at his face twisted with loathing, and realization crashed over her. Silas planned to cut all ties with her, dumping every ounce of blame onto her alone.
Shock gave way to overwhelming humiliation and panic.
She screamed shrilly. “Silas! What is this? You’re throwing me away now? Don’t act like you’re pure and blameless!”
“Did I hold a knife to your throat to force you into flirting with me? Did I make you massage my ankles? I only teased you a little, and you came running like a dog to a bone!”
Willa scrambled to her feet and lunged for him again. Silas blocked
—
her hard, sending her stumbling backward.
She grew even more hysterical. “Now that Chloe’s left you, you turn around and blame me? Silas, you’re nothing but a coward! You can’t tell right from wrong, and now you want to pin all this on me? Who do you think you are? You couldn’t even complete a simple marriage license appointment. No wonder Chloe left you!”
“I wouldn’t want you either if your family didn’t have money!”
Silas could not bear another word. He spun on his heel to leave. But Willa lost all reason. She threw herself forward, wrapping both hands tightly around the cuff of his trousers.
She lifted her tear-streaked face. Her venomous expression flickered, then dissolved into desperate pleading, her mood shifting with terrifying speed.
“Don’t go! Silas, please don’t leave me. I truly can’t live without you. I’ve burned all bridges with Chloe. Without you, I won’t survive in this city.”
“Stay with me. Forget Chloe, and we can live peacefully from now on. I’ll do whatever you want…”
Silas glanced down at her hands clinging desperately to his pants, then at her groveling, tear-streaked face. A wave of overwhelming nausea churned in his stomach.
He yanked his leg free hard enough to send her sprawling.
He glanced over his shoulder. “You’re truly shameless, Willa.”
With that, Silas walked out.
—
The words left Willa rooted to the floor. She collapsed onto the floor, breaking into wild, hysterical laughter mixed with sobs.
Days passed, yet Silas kept hounding me. He was a relentless shadow, lingering outside my office every single day.
On the first day, he brought an extravagant bouquet of red roses. The next, a luxury designer handbag. On the third day, he knelt before me holding the velvet jewelry box containing that necklace I’d once loved.
“Chloe, look! I managed to get it, just for you. I was such an idiot before. I promise I’ll never mess up again. Don’t break things off with me, okay?”
I didn’t spare the velvet box a single glance. I walked straight to the public trash bin, lifted my wrist, and dropped it straight into the trash without a second thought.
Once that was done, I pulled open the passenger door of the black sedan parked beside me. “Silas, stop harassing me from now on. If you don’t, I will call the police.”
I bent down and climbed into the car.
My cold demeanor enraged Silas; his eyes turned red. He instinctively stepped forward to grab the car door.
But the man in the driver’s seat had already pushed open his door and stepped out. Before Silas could utter a single word, Charlie his eyes darkened with rage.
Crack!
Silas was caught off guard. He stumbled backward and crashed onto
—
his back, blood immediately seeping from the corner of his mouth.
Charlie spoke coldly. “Silas, I have nothing but contempt for you.”
