I Forced Him Into Marriage For Six Years, Only To Witness Him Sacrifice His Life For Me Chapter 06

The hospital corridor lights burned Linus’s eyes.

Catherine’s wound on her forehead had been stitched up in three stitches.

She leaned against his shoulder, sobbing softly.

Linus, I was so scaredthat driver was horrible,

he asked if I was blind”

And then he saidhe said women like me

deserve to get hit and die”

Linus patted her back, his tone soft.

It’s okay. I already sent my assistant to handle it.

You just rest.”

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out with one hand and glanced at the

screen. It was a text from me.

[Linus. We’re done.]

He stared at it for a few seconds, then let out a

dry, helpless laugh.

Same old thing.

Every time he paid some attention to Catherine, I’d

threaten to break up.

Catherine noticed his reaction. She leaned in,

peeked at the screen, and her eyes welled up

again.

Was that Linette? It’s my fault.”

If I hadn’t gotten into that accident, you wouldn’t have had to come, and she wouldn’t be upset.”

Linus, you should go back. I’ll be fine on my own.

Really.”

She started to pull away from his shoulder, but he pressed her back down.

No need. You know how she is. She’ll calm down

once she’s cooled off.”

He typed out a quick reply.

[Don’t be like this. We’ll talk when I get home.]

He hit send.

But the message failed to deliver. He’d been

blocked.

Linus’s hand froze.

He figured it was network lag. He tapped into the

chat box and refreshed it once more.

Still, the message failed to send.

He went to his contacts and called my number.

I’m sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service”

The cold automated voice echoed down the hallway.

A nagging, formless unease crept up from his chest.

He shot to his feet, startling Catherine.

Linus, what’s wrong?”

I need to go back.”

He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.

Stay here. I’ll send my assistant over.”

Catherine grabbed his wrist.

Where are you going?”

Linette’s not okay. I need to check on her.”

She’s fine!”

Catherine’s voice suddenly pitched higher.

She broke up with you. Isn’t that what you

wanted? Now you don’t have to be scared

anymore.”

Scared of what?”

Linus turned around, confused.

Scared that you spent six years with her out of

obligation, and now you feel too guilty to end it

yourself!”

Catherine’s face was dead serious.

She’s the one who said it. What’s there to hesitate

about?”

She held his gaze, her words sharp and deliberate.

Linus, do you even love her? Since I came back,

how many full weekends have you spent with

her?”

When I had a fever, you drove over in the middle of the night. When I moved, you handled

everything. When I got in an accident, you dropped

the wedding venue and ran straight to me.”

Ask yourself who’s actually in your heart?”

Linus’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He looked away.

It’s not the same”

How is it not the same?”

Catherine laughed.

You’ve just been with her longer than you’ve been with me. But your heart has always belonged to

just one person. That’s me.”

Everyone can see it. You’re the only one still lying

to yourself.”

Linus clenched his jacket in his fists. He stood

there in silence for a long time.

Night air blew through the window, ruffling his

collar.

You’re overthinking it.”

His voice came out flat.

From the day you came back, I’ve only seen your as a sister and my family. Not a lover.”

Catherine’s smile froze. The light in her eyes

dimmed, inch by inch.

What did you say?”

Linus lifted his gaze, clear and steady.

I’m sorry I made you misunderstand.”

What’s done is done. The person I love now is

Linette.
