I Forced Him Into Marriage For Six Years, Only To Witness Him Sacrifice His Life For Me Chapter 07

Catherine’s lips began to tremble. Her nails dug

into her palms.

I don’t believe you!”

Linus, if you walk out that door today, there’s no

going back for us!”

He glanced at her, then turned and walked out.

The door clicked shut behind him.

He drove home fast. Ran two red lights without even noticing.

When the elevator doors opened, the hallway was pitch black.

He fumbled for his keys in the dark, his fingers. shaking so badly it took him three tries to get the key in the lock.

Linette?”

He pushed the door open and called out

instinctively.

No answer.

His heart dropped. He hurried into the bedroom.

The closet stood open, more than half empty.

My passport and ID should have been in the drawer. But now they were gone.

Linus stood there, and suddenly the room felt

terrifyingly empty.

He scrolled through his contacts and called every friend of mine he could find.

Linette? Haven’t heard from her. What’s wrong?”

She didn’t come to me. Did you two fight again?”

No one knew where I’d gone.

He slid down to the floor, back against the bed

frame.

He had been blocked on WhatsApp. And my

phone number disconnected.

There was nothing he could do but clench his fists

and pound the floor, over and over, in helpless.

regret.

At first light, Linus drove to my office.

He hadn’t shaved. His shirt collar was wrinkled. He

looked wrecked.

The receptionist recognized him and flinched at

the sight.

Mr. Fletcher? Are you looking for Ms. Dawson?”

Is she in?”

Ms. Dawsonshe already left the company.”

Linus froze.

When?”

Three days ago.”

The girl’s voice dropped, startled by the red in his

eyes.

She submitted her resignation three days ago and finished the paperwork that same day. She left in a hurry and left a lot of things behind.”

Three days ago.

His mind went blank.

Three days ago, I’d just threatened suicide to get

him to marry me.

Right after he gave in, right after he bandaged the wound on my arm, I’d turned into a different

person and said, Forget the wedding. We’re done.”

He thought I was just throwing a tantrum, waiting for him to prove he’d never waver.

Now he understood.

I’d already been planning to leave.

The sun was blazing when he walked out of the

office building. It made him dizzy.

He didn’t know where to go. He just drove.

When he finally snapped back to reality, he found

himself at the beach.

We’d come here so many times.

Six years ago, right on this sand, he’d grabbed my hand and stammered out the questionwould I be

his girlfriend.

The wind was brutal that day. My hair was a mess,

but my face was burning red.

I said yes, and he was so happy he spun me

around on the sand until we both fell into the water, laughing while soaked through.

Now Linus stood on that same beach alone.

In the distance, a couple was taking photos. The

girl stood on tiptoe to grab the guy’s hat, and he bent down, laughing.

He watched them for a long time. His throat tightened.

He left the beach and drove to the movie theater, where we’d had our first date six years ago.

He’d bought tickets to a horror movie on purpose. I’d clung to his arm the whole time, my face buried in his shoulder.

When the credits rolled, I looked at him with teary

eyes.

Linus, you did that on purpose!”

He couldn’t stop laughing, wiping the corner of my

eye with his thumb.

Sorry, I won’t do it again. Next time we’ll watch a

cartoon.”

The theater was still there, but the sign out front

had been replaced.

Linus stood in front of the ticket booth, staring at

the unfamiliar titles on the schedule.

He realized they hadn’t seen a movie together in

three years.

He used to say he was busy. Then he’d say

Catherine needed him, and he’d catch me next

time.

He’d burned through every single next timeuntil

there were none left..

His phone buzzed, pulling him back. It was his

assistant.

Mr. Fletcher, I found her!”

Mr. Fletcher, I found out where she went. One of her coworkers said she booked a trip to Millbrook three days ago.
