My Husband Realized He Loved Me After I Stopped Loving Him Chapter 07

I never thought I’d see Grant Ashworth again in

this lifetime.

By my third year in Europe, I’d started dating

someone new.

Life had gone quiet and steady, like the decade of madness and blood before had all happened to

someone else, in some other life.

I was in a convenience store buying water when I

heard the newsa diving spot had had a piranha

attack.

My hand jerked, and the water bottle went rolling

across the floor.

No idea what happened out there. It’s usually

completely safe.”

Heard only one guy got hurt. Some other diver shoved him right at the fish when he saw them comingthe poor guy’s leg is basically ruined. Just bad luck, I guess.”

I pushed through the crowd without a second thought and ran straight for the bay.

A ring of people had gathered on the beach.

My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would

climb out of my throat.

Then I saw Grant, gripping Theo’s arm.

I froze on the spot.

My eyes dropped to the wound on Theo’s legand

something detonated in my head.

I didn’t think. I lunged forward and slapped Grant

across the face as hard as I could.

What were you doing to him?!My voice shook.

I’m warning youtouch him again and I will not let

this go!”

Then I turned and knelt beside Theo, carefully

checking the wound on his leg.

Blood poured from a tear in his wetsuit, mixing

with seawater.

I was on the verge of tears.

Last year, in the avalanche, Theo had carried me

half a mountain to save my life, and it had nearly

cost him this leg.

The doctors said he was lucky to keep it at all,

said one more bad injury could cripple him.

I told you not to come, I told you-”

My voice cracked. Does it hurt? I’ll call an

ambulance-”

Theo caught my hand, eyes crinkling.

I’m fine. Just a scratch.”

He glanced toward Grant, lowering his voice.

That man over there saved me.”

The piranhas came out of nowherehe’s the one who pulled me out.”

I froze.

My leg’s fine, just a surface wound. His leg, on the

other hand-”

I finally followed his gaze.

Grant was still standing there.

One pant leg, from the knee down, was soaked in

blood, the skin torn open.

He was drenched head to toe, standing motionless, watching me.

I opened my mouth, a little embarrassed.

I’m sorry, I misunderstood you just nowI

thought you’d pushed him in.”

I looked away, stiff.

Thank you for saving my boyfriend.”

Grant’s eyes didn’t move from my face for a long

moment.

Then, finally, he laughed.

No misunderstanding. If I’d known earlier he was

your boyfriend-”

He paused. I probably would have pushed him in

myself.”

I spun back to face him.

Then watched him get eaten alive.”

He said it slowly, the smile still on his lips, no trace

of it in his eyes.

I stepped back on reflex, putting myself between him and Theo, my whole body on guard.

Grant watched me do it, pressed his lips together,

and looked away.

I pulled Theo up and turned to leave.

I just wanted to get away from this madman.

Vivian. In your eyes, I’m not a good person

anyway, am I?”

My steps faltered.

He’d still managed to unsettle me.

Grant, leave him alone.I turned and looked him.

dead in the eye. Touch one of his fingers and I will

end you.”

I turned back around and didn’t look back again.

A soft laugh drifted from behind mefollowed by Grant’s voice, so low it was barely audible:

You’ve practically been killing me slowly anyway.
