My Husband’s Cooking Bites Me Chapter 08
I froze.Â
My fingers tightened around my phone as I staredÂ
at the photo of Thomas and me in the room.Â
Everything suddenly made sense.Â
Right then, my phone buzzed.Â
The private investigator had sent me the finalÂ
piece of evidence.Â
I took a deep breath, sat down on the couch, andÂ
called the police.Â
Once that was done, I headed for the kitchen.Â
I needed to get the evidence out of the fridgeÂ
before Thomas could destroy it.Â
But when I opened the fridge, the container wasÂ
gone.Â
I couldn’t find it anywhere.Â
Just then, Thomas came home.Â
He was carrying some yogurt.Â
He stood in the doorway, watching me with a faintÂ
smile.Â
“Babe, weren’t you supposed to be resting in bed?Â
What are you doing up?”Â
I said nothing.Â
Thomas set the yogurt on the table and slowlyÂ
walked toward me.Â
The man standing in front of me suddenly felt likeÂ
a complete stranger.Â
“You know, don’t you? You figured it out.”Â
He held out his hand.Â
“Come on, give me your phone. Let’s see whatÂ
evidence you’ve got.”Â
I instinctively backed away.Â
The police weren’t here yet.Â
I could be in danger at any second.Â
I couldn’t confront him now.Â
I forced a smile.Â
“Babe, what are you talking about?”Â
Thomas suddenly pulled out his phone and turnedÂ
the screen toward me.Â
My eyes widened.Â
On his screen were the feeds from the securityÂ
cameras inside our house.Â
Without me knowing, Thomas had installedÂ
cameras all over the house.Â
He’d been watching me.Â
“If you already know, why are you still pretending?”Â
He calmly put away the things he’d just bought asÂ
he spoke.Â
“I know I went too far.”Â
“But we can sit down and talk about this.”Â
“Call the police back. Tell them the call was aÂ
mistake.”Â
I stared at him for a second.Â
Then I laughed.Â
Thomas had always been confident.Â
He had cameras all over the house, but he couldn’tÂ
see my private messages with the investigator.Â
He thought I only knew that he’d lied about beingÂ
laid off and that he’d been poisoning me.Â
There was no way I was calling the police back.Â
I pointed at him.Â
“Thomas, you disgust me!”Â
“You cheated on me! Why couldn’t you just divorce me?”Â
“I wouldn’t have fought you on it!”Â
“So why would you do this to me?!”Â
Thomas reached out and brushed a strand of hairÂ
away from my forehead.Â
“Ellie, look at you. Always so worked up.”Â
“You’re nothing like Chloe.”Â
“She’s gentle. If you met her, you’d probably likeÂ
her too.”Â
Then he smiled.Â
“And remember what I told you on our weddingÂ
day?”Â
“Divorce was never an option for us.”Â
“The only way out was death.”Â
I stared at him.Â
It felt like I’d never known this man at all.Â
“So that’s why you poisoned my food?!”Â
Thomas laughed.Â
“Poison? Ellie, how can you call it that?”Â
“It’s not poison.”Â
“It’s a supplement.”Â
I shook with anger.Â
“Right. A powdered herbal extract.”Â
“That’s why the hospital couldn’t detect it.”Â
“But it was slowly breaking my body down.”Â
“Until eventually, I’d die.”Â
Thomas immediately went on alert.Â
“How do you know that?”Â
His voice sharpened.Â
“You’re lying! What proof do you have?!”Â
He hadn’t expected me to know the whole truth.Â
Suddenly, he lunged at me and reached for my phone.Â
But right then, the police arrived.Â
They rushed in and forced Thomas to the floor.Â
“We got a report of poisoning!”Â
“Stay down!”
