Silent Revenge of a Hidden Heiress Chapter 04
I slept like garbage that night.Â
When I got up the next morning, I had a low–gradeÂ
fever, and my throat hurt so bad it felt like I’dÂ
swallowed glass.Â
I shook my head to clear the fog, and headed toÂ
the administration office to get my eventÂ
approved.Â
The dean’s eyes went wide when he saw theÂ
Sinclair Group corporate seal on the document.Â
He couldn’t believe it. “You… you’re the daughter ofÂ
Sinclair Group’s CEO?”Â
I nodded quietly.Â
My mom kept a low profile, and I never likedÂ
bragging about my family.Â
I never even told Nathan, not once.Â
The dean sped through the approval process inÂ
two minutes, then handed the document back toÂ
me with both hands.Â
Before I left, I asked the dean for a favor.Â
“This is a last–minute event. Please don’t tellÂ
anyone about this, okay?”Â
He agreed immediately.Â
I walked out of the office, and ran straight into Nathan and Sheryl.Â
They were shoulder to shoulder, both holding stacks of printed papers, still going over the kissing booth details.Â
Nathan’s casual voice cut right through me.Â
“Elaine says she’s against the kissing booth, but I guarantee you she’ll be first in line that day.”Â
Sheryl laughed into her hand. “Elaine acts tough. but she’s obsessed with you! When are you gonna go make up with her?”Â
“No rush, she’ll crack sooner or later-”Â
He’d just gotten to the “la” when he spotted me, and his face went white.Â
Panic flashed across his face for a few seconds, then he calmed back down, like he was waiting for me to say hi first.Â
But I just walked straight past him without lookingÂ
at him.Â
My ignoring him made Nathan’s face changeÂ
instantly. He grabbed my arm in a hurry.Â
“Elaine, didn’t you see me? Still mad?”Â
Sheryl lightly tugged on Nathan’s arm. “Nathan, don’t do that, you’ll hurt Elaine.”Â
Nathan didn’t move. He just stared at me, hard.Â
His grip was hurting me, and I couldn’t hold back aÂ
small grunt.Â
“I have a cold. My throat hurts.”Â
Nathan heard the hoarseness in my voice, and hisÂ
attitude softened instantly.Â
He let go of my arm apologetically, rubbed the spot he’d grabbed, and asked softly.Â
“I told you to take the cold medicine, didn’t I? Didn’tÂ
you get enough rest?”Â
He reached out as he spoke, going to feel myÂ
forehead for fever.Â
I tilted my head away, dodged his touch.Â
Nathan’s hand hung there in midair, frozen. HeÂ
sighed. “Stop being mad at me, okay? I’ll take you to the health center. your immune system’s garbage, you had an IV for three days last time, you had like five needle pricks…”Â
“Nathan,” Sheryl said out of nowhere.Â
Both of us looked at her.Â
She looked worried. “If we don’t get the venue application stamped today, we won’t have enough time to get everything ready. Wasting time will just throw all the money out the window.”Â
I said nothing. I just stared at Nathan, waiting forÂ
him to choose.Â
He struggled with it for a long time, then finally made up his mind and apologized quietly, “Elaine, go to the health center first. As soon as I get the stamp, I’ll come right over to be with you. I’ll even bring that custard pudding you like.”Â
I felt empty inside. No pain, no disappointment.Â
I gave him the understanding smile I’d practiced aÂ
hundred times before. I was used to it by now.Â
I said, “Okay. Go handle your business.”Â
Nathan exhaled in relief, then dragged Sheryl into the office in a hurry.Â
I turned around without a second thought and walked straight to the school gate.Â
My mom’s car was parked on the side of the road.Â
I opened the door and climbed in.Â
My mom handed me a piece of paper.Â
“You sure about this? Go to a university overseas,Â
never come back?”Â
I looked at the offer in my hand, and my eyes didn’t waver for a second.Â
“Yeah, I’m sure. I’m never coming back.”Â
As we pulled out of the school gate, we ran right into Nathan rushing back toward the office. His eyes were full of panic.Â
Through the window, I locked eyes with him.
