Silent Revenge of a Hidden Heiress Chapter 05
After he got the stamp, Nathan didn’t say anotherÂ
word to Sheryl. He bought the custard puddingÂ
and ran straight to the health center.Â
There were a few students scattered around theÂ
infusion room, but Elaine was nowhere to beÂ
found.Â
Nathan’s heart jumped straight into his throat.Â
But he told himself Elaine must have gone back toÂ
the dorms already.Â
He ran to the front desk to ask. The school nurse flipped through the sign–in sheet and shook herÂ
head.Â
“Elaine? No one by that name checked in today.”Â
Panic shot through his chest. He turned and ran straight for the girls‘ dorms.Â
He texted Elaine over and over along the way–noÂ
reply. Called her–no answer.Â
When he got to her dorm building and flaggedÂ
down Elaine’s roommate, the girl exchangedÂ
confused looks with her roommates beforeÂ
saying, “Elaine didn’t tell you? She took a few sick days and went home to rest.”Â
Nathan let out a sigh of relief, thanked her, andÂ
headed straight for Elaine’s hometown.Â
But he suddenly froze mid–step.Â
It hit him right then–he knew absolutely nothing about Elaine’s family.Â
All he knew was that “mom” was the familyÂ
member Elaine mentioned most often.Â
He had no clue how many people were in herÂ
family, what their financial situation was, or evenÂ
where they lived.Â
Nathan’s face twisted into a bitter grimace.Â
He pulled out his phone again and tried one moreÂ
time to reach her.Â
All he got was one single new notification.Â
[Nathan, let’s break up.]Â
He ran straight to all my old spots looking for me,Â
but I was nowhere to be found.Â
By the end, a sharp pain suddenly pierced his chest for no reason.Â
He ran instinctively toward the school gate.Â
All he found there was a Rolls–Royce Cullinan with tinted, fully closed windows.Â
The glass was pitch black, but he couldn’t lookÂ
away as it drove off.Â
Even though he knew I wasn’t inside, he still stared until the SUV vanished from sight.Â
My phone buzzed once, but I didn’t rush to checkÂ
- it. I carefully zipped up the back of my formallÂ
gown first.Â
Only then did I light up the screen. Sure enough, itÂ
was a text from Nathan.Â
In the few days I’d been home resting, he’d blownÂ
up my phone with dozens of calls and texts.Â
There were so many that I half–worried he’d runÂ
out of calling credit.Â
By today, he’d clearly run out of patience. All heÂ
sent was one furious, unhinged message.Â
[If you want to break up, fine. I’ve done nothingÂ
wrong. Don’t you dare regret this later–beggingÂ
me won’t change anything!]Â
I locked my screen calmly, pulled back the fittingÂ
room curtain, and turned to my mom.Â
“How does this dress look on me?”Â
My mom nodded, her face full of approval. “It’sÂ
gorgeous. It brings out your skin tone so well, andÂ
it fits your figure perfectly.”Â
Right after she finished speaking, my phone rangÂ
again.Â
My mom frowned. “Is he still harassing you?”Â
I glanced at the screen and shook my head. “NotÂ
him. It’s a friend from the student council.”Â
I answered the call. It was an underclassmanÂ
who’d worked under me before.Â
“Elaine, what happened between you and Nathan? He said today at the meeting you skipped work without reason and slacked off, then fired you inÂ
front of everyone!Â
“You’re the most careful person we know, andÂ
you’re always so nice to all of us. We’re all so mad for you!”Â
I listened to her vent on my behalf, but I feltÂ
nothing.Â
I huffed a soft laugh.Â
“It’s fine. I didn’t really want to stay on the student council anyway.”Â
I’d originally joined the student council just to be on the same page as Nathan.Â
But after two years, I realized my own value and potential were so much bigger than I’d everÂ
imagined.Â
If Nathan couldn’t see that, someone else would.Â
After calming the underclassman down, I walked my mom through the final fundraiser timeline.Â
She’d already lined up a team of staff for me,Â
who’d come to campus tomorrow to help me setÂ
up the venue.Â
Before bed, she poured me a glass of low–alcoholÂ
wine, a rare treat.Â
She smiled proudly, patted my head, and saidÂ
softly, “My Elaine’s all grown up now. I can’t wait toÂ
see you shine tomorrow.”
