They Made Me Confess To A Bricklayer, Then I Saw The Comments Chapter 11

After Chloe’s family business collapsed, she stopped coming around. Preston went quiet too.

Until one night, my phone rang.

It was a call from the hospital.

“Is this Serena? Rowan’s been in a car accident. He’s in the ER.”

The ground fell out from under me.

[What?!]

[Wait no… in his past life he DIED in a car crash.]

I ran out of the house and jumped into a cab.

My hands shook the entire ride.

The reader feed kept replaying in my head. In his past life, he died in a car crash.

Was it happening again?

The second I got to the hospital, I ran for the ER. He was sitting up on the hospital bed, gauze wrapped around his head, his arm in a cast.

But he was awake.

He saw me and blinked. “What are you doing here?”

I crashed into him and sobbed.

He went rigid for a second, then his good hand found my back.

“I’m okay. It’s just a scratch.”

“Then why do you have a CAST?”

“It’s just a hairline fracture.”

“A hairline fracture is still a broken bone!”

He sighed. “Serena, don’t cry. I’m really okay.”

I looked up at him through blurred eyes.

“How did this happen?”

He was quiet for a second. “Someone hit my car on purpose.”

“Who?”

“Preston.”

[Has the male lead lost his mind?]

[Is he trying to take out the second male lead??]

[Call 911 call 911 call 911.]

I reached for my phone to call 911, but he caught my hand.

“I already called the cops.”

“The police went to his house. He was drunk and fled the scene. He’s probably at the station right now.”

I was shaking all over. “Why would he do this?”

Rowan looked at me, perfectly steady.

“Because he knows he can’t win.”

I stayed with him at the hospital all night. Sometime before dawn, the police called.

Preston was in custody.

He was facing DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular assault charges. Multiple counts. He was looking at at least three years.

I hung up and looked at Rowan. He’d fallen asleep, his brow still creased even in rest.

I held his hand. In this life, I wasn’t going to let him be alone again.

The next day, Preston’s mother showed up at the hospital.

She broke down crying outside his room, begging Rowan not to press charges.

My mom planted herself in the doorway, her voice like ice.

“Your son almost killed my son-in-law, and you want my daughter to let him walk?”

Preston’s mother sobbed so hard she could barely speak. “He’s just a kid. He didn’t mean it…”

“A twenty-three-year-old man is not a kid.” My mom’s voice cut like a blade. “His father’s been committing tax fraud, and your son tried to use his car as a weapon. Is there a single decent person in your family?”

[The mother-in-law is FIERCE.]

[The Crawford family had it coming.]

Rowan didn’t say a word through any of it. He just held my hand.

Months later, Preston was sentenced to three years.

Chloe’s family collapsed completely. Her father was arrested for bribery. Her mother took her out of the country.

Before leaving, she texted me.

[Serena, you won.]
