“What’s it to you!”
A nameless fury burned inside me. I wrenched my hand free from Jakub’s grip and slapped Zoey hard across the face.
She cried out in pain, clutching her cheek in shock. Crack! The next second, Jakub returned the slap on my behalf.
“Was that necessary, Anya? If it weren’t for your vanity, would Mom, Dad, and I have done this?”
“These five years haven’t been easy for you, but do you think they were easy for us?”
“How dare you raise your hand! It seems the punishment wasn’t enough!”
I stood frozen in place, listening to his cold voice, feeling my heart die completely.
After a long pause, I lifted my eyelids and spoke mockingly, “Still not enough? Then I’ll pay you back with my life. Is that enough?”
“Stop talking nonsense!”
His eyes turned icy as he called the driver and shoved me into the car.
Tears streamed down my face as I laughed bitterly.
“Going home? Which home?”
He didn’t even glance at me, pulling out his phone to call our parents.
“Come back. Yes, Anya knows.”

“I didn’t tell her. She overheard!”
Bang!
Frustrated, he hurled his phone away, his aura dark and oppressive.
When he looked at me, his eyes were full of impatience.
“Why are you crying? What right do you have to cry, Anya!”
“I’ve suffered alongside you these five years, yet I’m the one getting blamed in the end.”
“What exactly do you have to cry about? Stop acting like you’re the only victim!”
“Anya, don’t cry. They don’t deserve your tears or your pity.” I closed my eyes, feeling the warmth and comfort from my wolf. I stayed silent, enduring his scolding all the way to our old villa.
I hadn’t been back to this home in five years. Being pushed inside now, all I felt was strangeness.
That bone-deep pain in my stomach surged again. Unable to hold back, I bent over and vomited a mouthful of black blood.
As I frantically tried to wipe it away, my brother saw but only sneered.
“You really went all out with the props, didn’t you? Trying to guilt-trip me?”
“Save the act for when Mom and Dad get back. These little tricks don’t work on me.”
Our parents returned quickly, arriving home early the next morning.

Jakub, unhappy after being scolded by them, had forced me to sit on the sofa all night waiting.
Sleepless and wracked with stomach pain, I was drenched in cold sweat, my spirit broken.
But when our parents walked in, I shot up like I’d been electrocuted.
In my memory, they had died five years ago.
Now, standing whole and unharmed in our home, it felt like a dream.
“Anya, do you admit your mistake?”
My father’s cold words yanked me back to reality.
I stood frozen, my voice hoarse.
“What did I do wrong?”
My father’s expression darkened slightly.
“After five years, you still don’t understand how hard it is to earn money?”
“Our fake deaths were meant to make you realize that Pack can’t always make money, and an Alpha’s wealth can run out.”
“Now that you know, it’s just as well. Saves us from having to stay away from home.”
His logic struck me as utterly absurd.
“So, it was me who kept you from coming home?”

“Anya, just admit you were wrong!”
My mother suddenly rushed over and grabbed my hand.
Tears welled in her eyes. “To teach you this lesson, your father hasn’t returned to Shadowfen Pack in five years.”
“It hasn’t been easy for you, but it was hard for us too. Stop being stubborn!”
“Just admit your fault, and the punishment ends now. Our family can…”
“I did nothing wrong!”
I roared, shaking off her hand.
“You’re the ones who are wrong! It’s you! I did nothing wrong!”
Crack!
As my words fell, my brother slapped me hard across the face.
“Is that how you speak to your parents?”
“Anya, what right do you have to feel wronged? What right do you have to be angry?”
“Do you think it was easy for me during that time? If I hadn’t been worried about you, I would have gone to Washington with Mom and Dad long ago!”
